Maternity Photos With a Toddler in Fresno

If you’re planning maternity photos with a toddler, you may already be wondering how your child will handle the session. Toddlers want to explore, move, and make their own decisions. They rarely care about the photo plan their parents have in mind. That’s completely normal, and it doesn’t prevent us from creating beautiful photographs.

During this family’s maternity session at Millerton Lake, their daughter spent part of the evening playing with Mom and Dad. They held her upside down, tossed her into the air, and followed what made her laugh. We also slowed things down for more structured family photographs and individual portraits of Mom.

A maternity session with an older child should hold both sides of this season. You deserve intentional portraits that celebrate your pregnancy. Your toddler also deserves room to be part of the story without carrying the pressure of making every photograph work. With thoughtful guidance and realistic expectations, we can create a gallery that feels joyful, polished, and true to your growing family.

If you’re still deciding when to schedule your session, my guide on when to take maternity photos walks through the ideal timeline and a few factors to consider.

Maternity Photos With a Toddler Preserve a Family Transition

A second pregnancy changes more than the number of people in your family. Your toddler is still your baby, yet they’re also moving toward a completely new role. Soon, your routines will shift, your attention will stretch, and this version of your family will look different.

That’s why I don’t treat maternity photos with a toddler as a few sibling poses added to Mom’s session. I photograph the relationships already holding the family together. The way your child reaches for you, plays with Dad, or settles into your arms belongs in the story too.

The baby you’re waiting to meet will grow up with their older sibling woven into every part of family life. Your toddler is the only child who will know what it felt like before the baby arrived, even if their memories of it eventually fade. These photographs preserve that small chapter while also showing how fully the newest member of the family was already loved and anticipated.

Your Toddler Doesn’t Need to Cooperate the Entire Time

A toddler may refuse to stand in a certain spot, lose interest quickly, or decide they only want one parent. They may have no interest in kissing the baby bump, even if they happily practiced at home. One hard moment won’t ruin the session, and I don’t expect young children to participate from beginning to end.

Instead, I work in short windows. We may begin with family photographs while your toddler feels curious and engaged. Then, they can explore with Dad while I create individual maternity portraits of Mom. When they’re ready to reconnect, we bring them back without making it feel like a demand.

Toddlers also don’t need to stay still for long to create a meaningful photograph. A quick snuggle, one belly touch, or a few seconds of laughter can give us exactly what we need. I pay attention to those brief openings and guide the rest of the family so everyone is ready when they happen.

You don’t need to spend the session correcting every movement or trying to produce a smile. That pressure often makes it harder for a toddler to return to the moment. I’ll step in when I need something specific and change direction when a prompt isn’t working. My guide to Fresno family photos with young kids explains more about the flexible approach I use with little ones.

Creating Polished Maternity Portraits Alongside the Play

A toddler-friendly session still includes more than playful family photographs. I want you to have images filled with movement and personality, but I also create the polished maternity portraits you came for.

For this session, we focused on the family photographs first while their daughter had energy to participate. We created images of everyone together, Mom with her toddler, and Dad playing with her near the water. Once we finished those portions, Mom changed into her white outfit for individual maternity portraits.

Dad stayed nearby and watched their toddler while I gave Mom my full attention. She didn’t have to divide her focus or worry about keeping her daughter engaged while being photographed. We could slow down, adjust the posing carefully, and highlight her pregnancy in a completely different way.

Saving those individual portraits for the end worked well for this family. Their toddler had already finished her part, and Mom had space to enjoy a few quiet minutes in front of the camera. The final gallery includes both their lively family dynamic and intentional portraits centered entirely on her.

Why Millerton Lake Worked for This Maternity Session

Millerton Lake gave this family enough space to create variety without moving between several distant locations. We began near the tall grass, where the setting sun created warm backlight around the family. Later, we moved closer to the shoreline for softer colors and open views of the water.

The open setting also worked well for their toddler. She could move, play with Dad, and take a break from being photographed without leaving the area. We didn’t have to keep her contained in a small space or ask her to stay beside Mom throughout the session.

Millerton Lake can change throughout the year as the water level, grasses, and surrounding hills shift with the season. I consider those conditions alongside sunset timing when planning a session there. For this evening, the pale landscape, calm water, and soft clothing palette came together beautifully without distracting from the family.

What to Wear for Maternity Photos With a Toddler

Clothing needs to look beautiful, but it also needs to let you move with your child. During maternity photos with a toddler, you may sit on the ground, bend down for a hug, or hold your child on one side. A dress that feels secure and comfortable makes those interactions much easier.

This family chose a soft palette of blush pink, white, and light neutrals. Their clothing coordinated without looking identical, and the colors worked well with Millerton Lake’s pale grasses and evening light. Keeping their daughter’s outfit simple also helped her remain part of the photographs without pulling attention away from Mom.

Mom brought a second white outfit for her individual portraits at the end. That change created a distinct look without requiring the entire family to switch clothes. I help clients plan choices like this before the session, and my client wardrobe includes dresses for women who want another option. We’ll also consider how the colors will look together in an album or framed artwork so the finished photographs feel cohesive.

How to Prepare Your Toddler for Maternity Photos

Keep your explanation of the session simple. You can tell your toddler that you’re going to play together while Ashley takes photographs. I also recommend showing them a picture of me beforehand. Seeing my face and hearing my name a few times can make me feel less like a stranger when we meet.

Avoid practicing smiles or promising that they’ll need to behave perfectly. Too much preparation can make the session feel like a test before it begins. Instead, talk about something they might enjoy, such as walking near the lake, playing with Dad, or snuggling with Mom.

Try to protect their usual nap and meal schedule on the day of your session. A filling snack beforehand can help, and you’re welcome to bring a clean, quick snack for a break. Water, wipes, and one familiar comfort item may also come in handy. I recommend leaving highly distracting toys in the car unless we truly need them.

Once the session starts, let me take the lead with directions. Your toddler may respond differently to a new person, and too many instructions at once can become overwhelming. I’ll ask for your help when a familiar voice or favorite game would make a difference.

Most importantly, plan for your actual child. If they love being tossed by Dad, we can use that. If they need a few minutes in Mom’s arms before exploring, we can begin there. My Maternity Session Prep Guide covers more planning details, including timing, clothing, and what to bring.

Plan Your Fresno Maternity Photos With a Toddler

You don’t need to wait until your child can follow every direction to include them in your maternity session. Their movement, preferences, and personality already belong to this chapter of your family’s story. My job is to guide the session so you can stay present instead of managing every moment from behind the scenes.

We’ll plan around your toddler while still giving your pregnancy the attention it deserves. That may include playful photographs by the lake, quiet moments with your child, portraits with your partner, and individual maternity images created just for you. Together, those photographs show more than a baby bump. They preserve the family preparing to welcome this baby home.
