Redwoods Family Photos in Santa Cruz

family photos in Santa Cruz

Jois and RJ had a magical afternoon spent with their children for their Redwoods family photos in Santa Cruz!

It’s always been one of my dreams to shoot a family session amongst the Redwoods. The awe-inspiring, towering trunks are some of the tallest and oldest trees in the world. Redwoods’ natural resiliency against drought and wildfires serve as a poetic beauty of the natural, deep bonds of familial love. A typical redwood’s root system is only 6 – 12 feet deep, so in order to create the strength to withstand powerful winds and floods, redwoods extends their roots outwards, up to 100 feet wide from the trunk, and live in groves where their roots can intertwine. To me, there is no better place for the representation behind family photos than in the Redwoods.

The Santa Cruz Mountains offer some of my favorite locations for all types of sessions – from engagement to family – in the state of California. While my favorite park, Big Basin State Park, burnt down a few years ago due to a wildfire, the area is still absolutely breathtaking. But don’t just take it from me! Have a look through some of Jois and RJ’s Redwoods family photos to see for yourself.

Jois and RJ decided to do a family session with me because they had hired me as their wedding photographer. They wanted to give their girls an opportunity to meet me and grow a bit more comfortable before the wedding day. While the girls were definitely more camera shy at the beginning of our session, they slowly opened up to me. I let them play and walk amongst the ancient trees and took time.

By standing back and letting the girls be curious and roam, I was able to capture their interactions with their parents, each other, and the natural beauty of the redwoods. Interactive photos often end up being some of my favorites captured from a session. I love seeing the joy light up on the girls’ faces as mom and dad led them through the redwoods.

The girls were ready by the time Jois and RJ’s wedding came around! They were all smiles for the camera, and displayed much more of their playful personalities. I was able to capture many heartfelt, sincere family moments for them on the wedding day. Here are some of my favorites!
