If you’re looking for fall family activities in Fresno, you probably already know that fall here doesn’t always look the way it does everywhere else. September can still feel like summer, the pumpkins show up long before we’re ready for sweaters, and sometimes we’re well into October before the weather finally starts cooperating.

But once those cooler mornings and evenings arrive, Fresno and Clovis become so much easier to enjoy with kids again.

Fall brings pumpkin patches, the Big Fresno Fair, trips to the zoo without planning around triple-digit heat, Halloween events, foothill drives, and evenings when you can finally head to the park after dinner. It’s also a great season for smaller traditions at home, like carving pumpkins, baking something together, or walking around the neighborhood to look at Halloween decorations.

As a Fresno family photographer and local mom, I wanted this guide to feel useful for families who actually live here. You’ll find bigger seasonal events worth putting on the calendar. And plenty of ideas for an ordinary Saturday when you realize everyone needs to get out of the house.

These fall family activities in Fresno are meant to give you options, not another list you need to finish before November. Pick a few your family will love, repeat the favorites, and leave plenty of room for the season to unfold as you go.

Pumpkin Patches and Fall Family Activities in Fresno

Pumpkin patches are probably one of the first things that come to mind when you start planning fall family activities in Fresno. Thankfully, we have quite a few options around Fresno, Clovis, Sanger, and Reedley. So you can choose between a quick pumpkin-picking trip and a bigger fall outing.

Since most local farms haven’t released their 2026 schedules yet, keep an eye on their pages as October gets closer. These are some of the Fresno County pumpkin patches that offered fall activities last year.

Sunflower Farm Stand in Sanger

Last fall, Sunflower Farm Stand turned its summer sunflower farm into a full fall experience. Families could visit the pumpkin patch, walk through a corn maze, feed the goats, explore the sunflower fields, and shop for produce, jams, honey, and other goodies. I like this option if you want more to do than simply choose a pumpkin.

Wild Patch Pumpkins in Clovis

For something closer to home, Wild Patch Pumpkins offered a large variety of pumpkins right in Clovis. They had different colors, shapes, gourds, and sizes, making this a good choice when the main goal is actually picking pumpkins. They also welcomed pets last year, which could be fun for families who want to bring their dog along.

Sweet Thistle Farms & Rocky Oaks Goat Creamery in Clovis

This one sounds especially fun with younger kids. Last year’s weekends included pumpkin varieties, hayrides, tractor rides, farm animals, food trucks, shopping, photo opportunities, and cheese sampling. Since it’s also right in Clovis, you don’t have to drive far to get more of a farm-style fall experience.

Simonian Farms in Fresno

Simonian Farms is another easy option if you want to stay in Fresno. Along with their pumpkin patch, they offered a fall photo area and their haunted caboose last year. It’s also a spot many Fresno families already know, which makes it easy to work into a Saturday without planning an entire day around it.

Billy Bob’s Pumpkin Grove at Hobb’s Grove in Sanger

Parents usually know Hobb’s Grove for its scarier Halloween attractions, but Billy Bob’s Pumpkin Grove has offered a much more kid-friendly experience. Last year’s activities included hayrides, a mini corn maze, and a fairy village. Their guided pumpkin grove experience was specifically for schools and small groups. So I’d check this year’s options before promising the kids a visit.

You definitely don’t need to make it to every pumpkin patch on this list. Pick one that fits your kids’ ages and the amount of energy you have that weekend. A toddler may be thrilled to choose a tiny pumpkin and look at goats for an hour. While older kids might have more fun with a corn maze or nighttime activity.

And because this is Fresno, check the temperature before putting everyone in sweaters for the pumpkin patch. October can still be surprisingly warm here. You can always save the cute fall layers for November.

The Big Fresno Fair With Kids

The Big Fresno Fair deserves its own spot on a list of fall family activities in Fresno because it’s one of those events that really does mark the season here. Even if the weather hasn’t completely gotten the fall memo yet, seeing the fairgrounds open somehow makes October feel official.

With kids, I think the fair is more fun when you don’t approach it like you need to see everything. There’s a lot happening between the rides, animals, exhibits, food, and entertainment. Pick a few things your family cares about most and leave room to wander.

For younger kids, that might mean spending more time looking at the animals than you expected and sharing one ridiculous fair snack. Older kids may want more time on the rides or exploring different exhibits.

I also think the fair is one of those places where repeating the same traditions every year can be part of the fun. Maybe your kids always want the same food, insist on seeing the animals first, or have one ride they talk about for weeks afterward. You don’t need to reinvent the experience every October.

The 2026 Big Fresno Fair is scheduled for October 7 through October 18. So this is one fall outing you can already put on the calendar. I’d still check the fair’s current schedule before choosing your day. Special events, promotions, entertainment, and family activities can vary throughout the run.

Fresno Chaffee Zoo in the Fall

The Fresno Chaffee Zoo made the summer guide, but I think it earns another spot for fall because the experience changes once Fresno finally cools down.

During summer, I’m thinking about how early we need to arrive and how long we can realistically stay before everyone gets hot. By fall, a zoo morning can be much more relaxed. You can spend longer at favorite exhibits, stop for lunch, and let your kids set the pace without watching the temperature quite as closely.

ZooBoo gives families another reason to visit Fresno Chaffee Zoo in October. This year, it takes place October 22, 23, and 24, 2026. So it’s an easy event to put on the calendar now instead of waiting for fall plans to come together.

The event runs in the evening, starting at 6:00 p.m., and gives kids a chance to wear their costumes and experience the zoo completely differently than they would during a normal daytime visit. I especially like having options like this with younger kids when you want to do something festive for Halloween without choosing an activity designed to scare them.

If you have a membership, fall is also when I’d take advantage of shorter regular visits. You don’t have to see the entire zoo every time. Go see the sea lions, let your toddler spend as long as they want watching the giraffes, grab a snack, and head home.

That flexibility is part of what makes memberships so nice with little kids. A two-hour zoo morning can be plenty, especially when you know you can come back another weekend.

Halloween and Fall Events for Families in Fresno and Clovis

October is when the local fall calendar really starts filling up. Between Halloween events, trunk-or-treats, festivals, and community activities, you can usually find something happening around Fresno or Clovis every weekend.

I especially like these kinds of events with younger kids because you can choose what fits your family. You might want a full evening in costumes. Or you might just need somewhere to go for an hour before heading home for dinner.

Tricks & Treats at Fresno Discovery Center

Fresno Discovery Center is hosting Tricks & Treats on October 17, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This one is specifically designed as a not-so-scary Halloween event, which makes it a good option for younger children.

Families can trick-or-treat at booths throughout the Discovery Center, make crafts, play games, make slime, listen to music, and grab food while they’re there. I also love that it happens during the day. If your kids aren’t ready for late Halloween nights yet, they can still put on their costumes and get the full excitement of going somewhere festive.

Local Trunk-or-Treats

Keep an eye out for trunk-or-treats hosted by local churches, schools, businesses, and community organizations as October gets closer. A lot of these aren’t announced until September or early October, so they’re difficult to plan for months in advance.

They can be especially nice with toddlers and preschoolers because everything tends to be contained in one area. You can stay for as long as your child is having fun and leave before everyone reaches their limit.

Fall Day Trips Near Fresno for Families

One of the funny things about fall in Fresno is that you sometimes have to leave the Valley floor to really see it. If you’re craving cooler weather, changing leaves, and an excuse to finally pull out a sweatshirt, heading toward the mountains can make a great fall day trip.

Shaver Lake

Shaver Lake is close enough for an easy day trip, especially once the summer crowds start thinning out. Walk around the village, grab lunch, spend some time near the lake, or simply enjoy being somewhere noticeably cooler than Fresno.

Bass Lake and the Sugar Pine Railroad

Bass Lake feels completely different once the busy summer season ends. You can walk near the water, grab something to eat, and enjoy a much quieter version of a place many Fresno families associate with summer.

If you want to make more of the drive, pair Bass Lake with the Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad near Fish Camp. A train ride through the forest is such a fun fall activity with kids! Especially once the mountain weather starts cooling down. Check their seasonal schedule before you go since train times and operating days can change throughout the year.

Kings Canyon National Park and Grant Grove

Kings Canyon is one of my favorite options when you want a mountain day without planning a complicated itinerary. Grant Grove makes it especially manageable with kids because you can see the giant sequoias and take shorter walks without committing to a long hike.

Bring lunch, stop at viewpoints along the way, and give your kids time to wander once you get into the trees. The drive itself is part of the experience, especially as the scenery starts changing outside the Valley.

Yosemite National Park

Yosemite is definitely a longer fall day trip from Fresno, but it deserves a mention if fall color is what you’re after. The Valley has a mix of trees that change throughout the season. So you can get those yellows, oranges, and reds that are much harder to find around Fresno itself.

With kids, I wouldn’t try to squeeze every major Yosemite stop into one day. Pick a few easy places to explore, bring a picnic, walk around the Valley, and leave enough time for the drive home. If your family can swing an overnight stay, even better.

Fall color timing in the mountains can shift each year depending on elevation and weather, so check current conditions before making a trip specifically for the leaves.

You don’t need to find the perfect fall foliage for one of these days to be worth it. Sometimes getting out of Fresno, opening the windows once the air cools down, and spending a few hours among the trees is enough to make it feel like the season finally changed.

Enjoy Fresno Parks Again Once the Weather Cools Down

One of my favorite parts of fall in Fresno is being able to use our parks in the middle of the day again. After months of planning outdoor time around the heat, it feels surprisingly nice to pack lunch and head somewhere without needing to be home by 10 a.m.

Woodward Park is an easy choice for a fall afternoon. Bring bikes or scooters, walk one of the trails, pack a picnic, or meet another family and let the kids run around. The Shinzen Friendship Garden is also inside Woodward Park if you want to add something different to your usual park visit.

San Joaquin River Parkway is another good option once walking outside becomes comfortable again. You can keep it simple with a short nature walk or bring a picnic and stay longer. This is also a nice season to let kids collect leaves, sticks, and other little treasures they notice along the way.

Lost Lake Park works well when you want more space and a little change from your neighborhood park. Cooler afternoons make it much easier to spend time near the river without feeling like you need a complicated plan for the day.

You could also make this the season you try a park you don’t normally visit. Pack a blanket, pick up lunch on the way, text another family to meet you there, and let that be the afternoon.

After a Fresno summer, simply being able to comfortably sit outside while your kids play feels like an activity in itself.

Easy Fall Family Activities in Fresno for Ordinary Days

Not every fall outing needs to involve tickets, a pumpkin patch, or driving into the mountains. Some weeks you just want something easy to do after preschool, on a Saturday morning, or when everyone has been inside for too long.

Pick Out Pumpkins at Trader Joe’s

This can be surprisingly exciting with little kids. Let everyone choose a small pumpkin or gourd, grab a seasonal treat, and take everything home to decorate the porch together. It’s simple, but it gives an ordinary grocery run a little bit of fall energy.

Go to a Garden Center

Once mums, pumpkins, and other fall plants start showing up, take the kids along and let them help choose something for the yard or porch. This could be a local nursery or simply the garden section at Lowe’s or Home Depot. Then they can help plant or water whatever they picked once you get home.

Choose Halloween Books at the Library

Make a library trip specifically for fall and Halloween books. Let each child choose a few, then keep a basket of them somewhere accessible at home for the season. You can return them and choose another stack later in October, which turns one idea into a few easy outings.

Go Looking for Halloween Decorations

Once October gets going, take an evening walk or drive around your neighborhood to see which houses have decorated. Younger kids especially can get very invested in finding pumpkins, ghosts, skeletons, and inflatable characters along the way.

Get a Fall Treat Together

Pick a bakery, coffee shop, or favorite local spot and go specifically for whatever seasonal treat sounds good. It doesn’t need to become a big outing. Sometimes getting a muffin or warm drink and sitting together for half an hour is plenty.

Instead of treating costume shopping like another errand, make an afternoon out of it. Browse the costumes, let your kids change their minds seventeen times, and enjoy hearing all the very serious reasoning behind why they absolutely need to be a dinosaur instead of the firefighter they wanted yesterday.

Some of my favorite fall traditions are the ones that happen at home. Once Fresno evenings finally cool down, being in the backyard sounds appealing again and even an ordinary weeknight can feel a little different.

A few easy ideas to try this fall:

• Paint mini pumpkins with younger kids
• Bake pumpkin bread or muffins
• Make caramel apples
• Decorate Halloween cookies
• Make homemade apple cider
• Have a backyard s’mores night
• Eat dinner outside on a cool evening
• Set up a backyard movie night
• Make popcorn and watch a favorite Halloween movie
• Decorate the porch together
• Let the kids make Halloween decorations for their rooms
• Plant a Fresno fall garden together
• Let each child choose an herb or vegetable to grow
• Make a big pot of soup and let the kids help
• Take an after-dinner walk to look at Halloween decorations
• Have a family game night with a fall treat

You don’t need to turn all of these into traditions your family has to maintain every year. Try a few that sound fun and see what your kids naturally ask to do again. Sometimes the tradition chooses itself.

Tips for Planning Fall Family Activities in Fresno

Fall in Fresno can be a little unpredictable. You might visit a pumpkin patch in 85-degree weather one weekend and need jackets in the mountains the next. A few things can make fall outings with kids much easier:

Check the temperature, not just the season.
October doesn’t automatically mean sweater weather here. Check the forecast before dressing everyone for the pumpkin patch, especially if you’ll be outside during the afternoon.

Remember that daylight starts disappearing quickly.
Those long summer evenings don’t stick around. If you’re planning a park picnic, mountain trip, or outdoor activity later in fall, give yourself more daylight than you think you’ll need.

Buy tickets early for the things you really care about.
If your family has one fall event you absolutely wants to attend, put it on the calendar early. You can leave plenty of weekends open while still making sure you don’t miss something everyone was excited about.

Don’t pack every October weekend.
Fresno’s fall calendar gets busy fast. Between the fair, pumpkin patches, Halloween events, school activities, family photos, and everything else, October can start feeling more hectic than fun. Pick the things your family actually wants to do and leave some weekends open.

Fall is short enough without spending the whole season trying to fit everything in. A pumpkin patch, one bigger event, a few evenings outside, and whatever traditions your family already loves can make the season feel full without making your calendar feel that way.
