Should You Wait Until Your Baby Is Older for Family Photos?

If you’ve been thinking about scheduling family photos with a baby, you may have caught yourself saying, “Let’s wait until they’re a little older.”

Maybe you’re waiting until they can sit on their own, walk, or celebrate their first birthday. It makes sense. Every new milestone feels like it will make family photos even more meaningful.

Since becoming a mom myself, I’ve realized just how quickly babies change during that first year. Every stage feels like it’ll last forever until suddenly it’s gone. As both a mom and a photographer, seven months has become one of my favorite ages to photograph. Babies are full of giggles, their personalities are starting to shine, and they’re so excited to interact with the people they love most.

This sweet family met me at Lost Lake when their son was seven months old, and he reminded me exactly why I love this stage so much. We spent the evening playing games, sharing cuddles, and watching him laugh through nearly the entire session. We started in one of my favorite fields during golden hour and finished by the river as the sun dipped lower behind the trees.

If you’re wondering whether you should wait until your baby is older for family photos, I hope this session gives you a different perspective.

Why So Many Parents Wait

When parents reach out about family photos with a baby, one of the most common things I hear is that they’re thinking about waiting just a little longer. Maybe they want their baby to be walking, talking, or closer to that first birthday milestone. It makes sense. Every few months brings something new, and it’s easy to believe the next stage will somehow be even more special than the one you’re in now.

The funny thing is, that feeling never really goes away. Once your baby is sitting independently, you start looking forward to crawling. Then it’s walking, then talking, then seeing their little personality come through in new ways. Before long, they’re running ahead of you instead of reaching up to be carried. There will always be another milestone on the horizon.

I’ve caught myself thinking the same way with my son, Oliver. There have been moments where I’ve thought, “I can’t wait until he does this next thing.” Then he reaches that milestone, and I find myself missing the stage we just left behind. It’s reminded me that every season of childhood has something worth holding onto, even while you’re excited for what’s next.

That’s one reason I encourage families not to wait for the “perfect” age. Every stage tells part of your family’s story, and once it’s gone, you don’t get to go back and photograph it again.

Why Seven Months Is Such a Sweet Age for Family Photos

One of the things I love most about this stage is how much joy babies seem to find in the simplest moments. Around seven months, their personalities are really starting to shine. They recognize the people they love, they laugh easily, and they’re so curious about the world around them. Almost everything feels exciting.

This little guy was the perfect example. Every time his parents made a silly face, bounced him in the air, or simply smiled at him, he’d burst into another fit of giggles. You could see how proud they were watching him grow, and it made the entire session feel lighthearted from beginning to end.

I also love that babies this age are still happy to be close to their parents. They’re content being held, snuggled, and passed back and forth between mom and dad. Those quiet moments often become some of my favorite photographs because they capture something you’ll miss sooner than you expect. Before long, they’ll want to wiggle down, explore on their own, and run in the opposite direction.

As both a photographer and a mom, I’ve come to appreciate those in-between stages even more. They may not get the same attention as newborn photos or first birthdays, but they’re every bit as meaningful. They tell the story of who your baby was before toddlerhood arrived, and that’s a season worth remembering.

Family Photos With a Baby Are Meant to Feel Natural

One of the biggest misconceptions about family photos with a baby is that everyone needs to look at the camera and smile. In reality, those moments make up only a small part of most sessions. I spend much more time encouraging families to interact with one another than asking them to pose.

For this session, we started in one of my favorite open fields at Lost Lake just before sunset. Mom and dad held their little guy close, walked together, and played the games that already made him laugh at home. Every smile came from something real. Nothing felt forced, and that’s exactly what I hope every family experiences during their session.

As the evening went on, we made our way down to the river. The change in scenery gave us a beautiful variety of images while keeping the pace relaxed. By that point, everyone felt comfortable, and we simply followed their son’s lead. When he wanted to snuggle, we leaned into those moments. When he wanted to laugh, his parents happily played right along.

Some of my favorite photographs from the evening came from those unscripted moments. They weren’t perfectly planned, and that’s exactly why they matter. Years from now, I don’t think this family will remember every outfit detail or every pose. I think they’ll remember the way their son laughed every time they looked at him.

Don’t Wait for the Next Milestone

As exciting as the next milestone will be, it doesn’t make the one you’re living any less important.

Before long, your baby will crawl away instead of reaching to be picked up. They’ll trade those belly laughs for new words, and eventually they’ll want to explore the world on their own. Watching them grow is one of the greatest joys of parenthood, but every new stage also means saying goodbye to the one before it.

Since becoming a mom, I’ve realized just how easy it is to keep looking ahead. I find myself getting excited about what’s next for Oliver, and then almost immediately missing the season we just left behind. It’s a reminder that there isn’t a perfect age for family photos because every age has something you’ll wish you could revisit.

If you’ve been putting off family photos with a baby because you’re waiting for the “right” time, I hope this encourages you to reconsider. Your baby doesn’t have to walk, talk, or celebrate a first birthday for this season to be worth remembering. The way they light up when they see you, the way they fit so perfectly in your arms, and the way your family loves each other right now are already enough.

Family Photos With a Baby Are Worth Taking Right Now

Looking back on this session, I don’t remember perfect poses or whether everything went exactly as planned. I remember a happy seven-month-old who couldn’t stop laughing and two parents who soaked up every moment with him. That’s what family photos are really about.

To this sweet family, thank you for trusting me to document such a joyful season of your lives. It was a privilege to watch your son’s personality shine and preserve these memories for you.
