Fresno Backyard Water Family Photos
Family photos don’t have to look a certain way. These Fresno backyard water family photos prove that when you let go of expectations, you create space for connection, joy, and true-to-you memories. This session with the Renteria family felt playful, relaxed, and full of heart—everything summer in the Central Valley should be.

Family Photos Can Be Whatever You Want
You don’t need a golden field, fancy outfits, or a picture-perfect studio to create meaningful portraits. If that doesn’t feel like you, skip it. The best photos reflect your real life, not someone else’s idea of what it should look like.
The Renterias chose their own backyard for this summer family session. It was familiar and fun, especially with the addition of water play. Sprinklers sprayed in the background. Bubbles floated across the grass. Their kids ran barefoot in swimsuits, and it all felt natural.
Letting go of perfection opened the door to presence. And presence is where the magic always lives.

Summer in Fresno: Making Photos Work with the Heat
Central Valley summers can make outdoor photos feel nearly impossible. With triple-digit heat, families often opt for mountains, beaches, or indoor studio sessions. But the Renterias found the perfect solution—water.
The sprinkler kept everyone cool and added so much texture and movement to the photos. Water droplets glistened in the golden light. Damp hair and splashes created a sense of play that felt completely authentic.
If you have little ones, this kind of setting is ideal. They are already used to playing outside, and water makes it feel even more like fun. When kids are happy and engaged, the photos naturally reflect it.

Effortless Styling That Felt Like Summer
One of the most visually beautiful aspects of this session was the color palette. The Renterias wore swimsuits in warm, earthy tones that photographed perfectly in the soft evening light.
Mom wore a rose-colored one-piece with a light cream cover-up. The color flattered her skin tone and tied into the tones around her. Dad wore rust-colored trunks that echoed the same palette. The boys wore striped trunks, one in terracotta and white, the other in minty green and cream. Their little sister wore a soft floral romper in blush and sand tones.
The styling felt cohesive without being overly coordinated. It was effortless but intentional. This is a perfect example of how choosing a few complementary tones can make your photos feel elevated and natural at the same time.

Choosing comfort-focused, well-fitting pieces in soft, non-neon colors is always a win for photography.

From Newborn to Now
This session was extra meaningful because I had photographed the Renterias years ago for one of their newborn sessions.
It’s such a joy to watch families grow. To witness them in a completely new season, yet still carrying the same love and warmth as before. Moments like these are why I always encourage families to keep documenting the in-between. Time moves so fast. And every season has something worth remembering.
Newborns turn into toddlers. Babies become big brothers. And the photos you take along the way become family treasures.

Why Backyard Family Photos Work
Backyard sessions often get overlooked, but they are full of potential. Here’s why they’re worth considering—especially for Fresno families:
1. Your kids are comfortable at home.
They don’t need time to warm up to a new space. They can jump right into play.
2. You skip the stress of travel.
No need to pack the car or rush out the door. Everything you need is right there.
3. You get to include your real life.
Your yard, your garden, the toys on the patio—it all adds personality and meaning to your session.
4. You can pivot easily.
Need a break? Want to change an outfit? Run inside for snacks? No problem.
5. Play becomes part of the session.
Sprinklers, bubbles, chalk, and more can naturally be included without needing to bring props.
Photos that reflect your life right now will always mean more than anything overly curated or styled.

Real Words from the Renteria Family from their Fresno Backyard Water Family Photos
The Renterias were kind enough to share a little about their experience:
We had an amazing experience working with Ashley! From start to finish, everything was seamless and stress-free. When it came to setting up the session, Ashley was incredibly responsive to our emails, helping us pick the best date and time that worked for everyone.
One of the things we appreciated the most was how Ashley helped us choose outfits that would work perfectly for the vision of the photoshoot. It made a huge difference in the overall vibe of the photos!
During the session, she was fantastic with our kids—making them feel comfortable and encouraging them to just be themselves. The result? Natural, playful moments that really captured their personalities! Ashley also made us feel so comfortable in our own skin. At one point, we completely forgot we were in bathing suits and playing in sprinklers—just having fun and enjoying the moment!
When our youngest child wanted to stay with us instead of joining in the playful shots with older siblings, Ashley was quick to pivot and still managed to capture them beautifully in a way that felt natural and unforced.
She has this amazing ability to get the kids to be their natural selves, and we ended up with genuine, joyful smiles that are simply priceless.
Of course, the photos are nothing short of stunning! These pictures will be cherished memories for years to come. We could not be happier with how everything turned out. We would definitely recommend Ashley to friends and family without hesitation!
I’m so grateful for their kind words. And even more grateful for the opportunity to photograph this season for them.

What Do You Want Your Photos to Feel Like?
Let this be your reminder: your family photos can look like whatever you want them to. You don’t need to dress in matching outfits or pose stiffly in front of a camera. And you don’t need the perfect location or ideal weather.
You just need to show up as you are. The love, laughter, and little in-between moments will take care of the rest.
These Fresno backyard water family photos are a perfect example of how photos rooted in play and presence turn into the most cherished keepsakes.
