Millerton Lake Proposal
A Millerton Lake proposal offers the perfect mix of golden hills, shimmering water, and a quiet shoreline that feels both intimate and breathtaking. When Luke reached out about proposing to his girlfriend, Madison, he already had Millerton Lake in mind. He had found one of my previous blogs featuring this exact location and instantly loved the feel of it.
Luke wasn’t familiar with Millerton Lake, but he felt drawn to its natural beauty. He wanted somewhere meaningful, peaceful, and scenic—something a little off the beaten path. As a professional baseball player, Luke’s schedule was packed and unpredictable, but we stayed in touch and kept things flexible. Once we knew the date lined up, I went out to the lake ahead of time to scout and prep.
Millerton’s shoreline changes frequently. The water level rises and falls with the seasons and weather, which means the look of the landscape can be different from one week to the next. To help Luke plan, I sent over updated photos of a few ideal proposal spots, noting which areas had the best light. Since he had never been to Millerton before, I wanted him to feel confident and supported every step of the way.

The Proposal Plan
Our plan was simple but intentional. Luke and Madison would arrive near golden hour and take a short walk to a grassy spot overlooking the lake. I’d be nearby, ready with my camera, pretending to be a casual hiker or someone reading by the water.
On the day of, I arrived about 15 minutes early. The light was perfect. The air felt warm and calm. But as I got to the chosen location, I noticed a large family gathering right where we had planned for the proposal to happen. Dozens of people, folding chairs, music, and coolers had taken over the shoreline. It was festive and fun, but definitely not what Luke was envisioning.
Luckily, I had built in extra time to adapt. I stayed in the area and pretended to read a book, trying not to look like a photographer waiting for something to happen. When Luke and Madison arrived, she was briefly distracted, giving us a window to adjust. I pointed subtly to another nearby spot—quieter, more open, still bathed in beautiful light. Luke caught on immediately.
Within moments, he guided her over and got down on one knee.

Capturing the Yes
Witnessing someone propose is unforgettable. It’s not staged or posed. It’s raw emotion in real time. Luke opened the ring box with steady hands. Madison covered her mouth, smiled, and then looked at him with so much joy it felt like time paused for a second.
I stayed at a respectful distance but had a clear view to document the moment from several angles. I captured the knee drop, her reaction, the ring, and the moment they embraced. The light filtered through the grass and reflected off the water behind them. The scene was peaceful, joyful, and filled with love.
These moments are always my favorite to photograph. They’re real, vulnerable, and powerful. And best of all, they can’t be repeated. Having these images to look back on means Luke and Madison can relive the exact moment they stepped into the next chapter of their story.

Engagement Session Right After Millerton Lake Proposal
After the proposal, we let the moment breathe. I gave Luke and Madison space to hug, laugh, and just enjoy the glow of what had just happened. After a few minutes, we eased into a relaxed engagement session right there along the lake.
Madison wore a pale blue eyelet sundress that moved beautifully in the breeze. Luke’s clean white shirt and neutral shorts complemented her look without distracting. Their outfits paired perfectly with the dry summer grass, soft hills, and gentle water. Everything felt cohesive and effortless.
We explored along the shore, stopping to photograph them walking, laughing, and just soaking it all in. They had fun with it. Nothing felt forced. They were so happy, and that joy came through in every frame.

A Note on Communication
Photographing proposals is one of my favorite things to do, but they do require a bit more communication than a typical session. That’s why I spend extra time checking in with my proposal clients ahead of time. We talk through the plan, lighting, timing, locations, and ways to make the moment smooth and authentic.
Luke and I kept in touch through the whole process. He asked thoughtful questions and stayed open to my suggestions. When we had to pivot locations the day of, his calm attitude made everything feel easy.
If you’re planning a Millerton Lake proposal, I can’t stress enough how helpful it is to have a photographer who knows the area and can help with logistics. I’m always happy to do a site visit, send sample photos, and help make a plan that fits your vision.

Why Millerton Is So Special
Millerton Lake is one of those places that looks different every time I go, but it’s always beautiful. Some days the water is high and glassy. Other days, you’ll find wide stretches of dried grass and wildflowers leading to the shore. It’s one of my favorite locations in Fresno County for proposals, engagements, and intimate couple sessions.
In the evening, the golden light washes over the hills. You get wide open skies and soft colors that feel warm and dreamy. There’s also enough variety within walking distance to give you multiple backgrounds in one short session.
For people like Luke and Madison who want a proposal that feels personal and connected to nature, Millerton offers the perfect setting.

A Few Funny Moments
Of course, no session is complete without a little unexpected humor. As we were finishing up, a group of geese started to wander toward us. At first, it was cute—just a few birds walking along the shoreline. But then more showed up.
Before we knew it, a whole crew of geese was slowly surrounding us. Luke and Madison laughed, and we joked that they had brought an audience for their big moment. We worked around the geese and got a few more photos before wrapping up.
That’s the beauty of shooting outdoors. You never know what little surprises will show up. But with the right attitude and a sense of humor, even the geese become part of the story.

Luke and Madison, thank you for letting me be part of such a meaningful day. It was an honor to help you plan, capture, and celebrate your proposal. You were both kind, warm, and full of joy. Watching your connection and love for each other was such a gift. I hope these images bring you back to that golden evening every time you see them. Wishing you all the best as you begin this new chapter together.

Luke left such a thoughtful review that I’d love to share here:
“Working with Ashley was an amazing experience! I was new to the Fresno area and needed help with where to propose to my girlfriend. Ashley picked out a location for that time of year (based on requests that I knew my girlfriend wanted, E.g natural background, secluded, golden hour), and gave me multiple different spots to pick from at the location. Ashley is very timely, she responded to my many questions leading up to the big day quickly and effectively. She is also extremely flexible, as I am a professional baseball player and it’s hard to know where I will be and at what time and she was very understanding and was easy to work with. I would recommend anyone in the area to use her, she did an amazing job and got our full gallery back to us within 2 weeks.“
