Why Client Connection Shapes Everything I Do
When Untethered invited me to share my perspective for their Standing Out in a Saturated Market feature, I knew exactly what I wanted to talk about. Not pricing, not gear, not competition—but people.
I wrote that piece because client connection has been the heartbeat of my business from the very beginning. It’s what makes this work meaningful for me. And it’s the reason I’ve grown this business that I truly love.
My Background in Nonprofit Work
Before I stepped fully into photography, I worked in a variety of nonprofit organizations. My path led me through very different spaces—supporting survivors of domestic violence, guiding children in after-school programs, advocating for social justice, and contributing to environmental initiatives. At first glance, those roles may seem unrelated to photography. But in each one, I was learning how to show up for people.
In domestic violence work, I witnessed the power of listening without judgment and creating a sense of safety for someone in a vulnerable moment. In after-school programs, I saw how encouragement and patience could bring out a child’s confidence and joy. Social justice work showed me the importance of amplifying voices that are often overlooked. And environmental work reminded me of the interconnectedness we all share.
Those years shaped the way I see people. They taught me that everyone longs to be seen, heard, and valued—whether they’re starting over after trauma, stepping into their first family photos, or walking down the aisle. I learned that presence matters more than perfection, and that even small acts of care ripple into lasting trust.
I carry those lessons with me into every wedding and family session. Photography, for me, is not just about pressing a shutter at the right moment. It’s about creating an environment where people feel safe, supported, and celebrated. It’s about honoring tender, fleeting, and joyful moments with the same intentionality I brought to my nonprofit work. That background is the foundation of the way I connect with my clients and why this business feels so deeply meaningful to me.
Why I Wrote about Client Connection
The photography industry is full of talk about marketing strategies, technical mastery, and finding ways to “stand out.” And while all of those things matter, I’ve found that none of them mean much without authentic connection.
I wrote thefeature because I wanted other photographers to know they don’t have to exhaust themselves chasing after the newest trend or trying to outshine their peers. The most sustainable, life-giving path is one built on genuine relationships and intentional client care.
That’s what has given me confidence, and it’s what has carried my business forward.
Building Long-Term Relationships
One of the joys of this work is walking with clients through multiple seasons of life. I’ve photographed engagements that turned into weddings, weddings that turned into newborn sessions, and newborns who grew into bubbly toddlers running around during family portraits.
Each time someone invites me back, it affirms the values I hold dear: consistency, trust, and care. I’m not just showing up for a session. I’m showing up for their story. And being trusted to continue documenting that story over years is the greatest privilege.
Those long-term relationships bring depth to my work. They allow me to photograph people not as strangers but as friends who feel comfortable being themselves in front of my camera. That comfort shines through in the images—it’s what makes them meaningful.
My Values as a Photographer
When I think about what guides my business, three values rise to the top:
- Connection – I believe photography is relational at its core. I want my clients to feel known and cared for, not just posed and photographed.
- Presence – I aim to show up with calm energy, ready to create space for clients to be fully themselves. Presence is what turns a photo session into a memory worth holding onto.
- Trust – From clear communication before the session to a thoughtful approach during, trust is what allows clients to relax and enjoy the process.
These values go far beyond photography. They reflect how I try to move through life—with intention, warmth, and a commitment to honoring the people around me.
Why Connection Matters More Than Perfection
I’ll be honest: I love learning new techniques, experimenting with light, and chasing that film-inspired aesthetic that feels timeless and true to my style. But none of that matters if clients walk away feeling unseen or stressed.
What stays with people is how you made them feel. Did they leave the session with laughter on their lips? Did they feel celebrated in their milestones? How did they sense that their story mattered?
Those are the questions I carry with me. And when the answer is yes, I know I’ve done my job well.
How Client Connection Shaped My Business
The more I leaned into connection and client experience, the more my business began to feel like mine. Not a copy of someone else’s path, not a scramble to keep up with trends, but a rhythm rooted in my strengths and values.
And the best part? That rhythm has made me enjoy this work even more. I love the planning and communication just as much as I love the sessions themselves, because I know each piece is part of building trust and creating memories that will last.
An Invitation to Read the Feature
Being featured on Untethered was such an honor because it gave me the chance to put words to this part of my journey. I wanted to speak to both photographers and clients—to show that success in this industry isn’t about constant comparison, but about steady, intentional connection.
If you’d like to read the full feature, you can find it here: Standing Out in a Saturated Market.
And if you’re a couple or family looking for a photographer in Fresno, I would love for you to see how these values take shape in my work. Every session is built on presence, trust, and genuine connection—because those are the things that turn photos into keepsakes.
Thank you to Untethered for allowing me to share my heart, and thank you to the couples and families who trust me with your stories. You are the reason I love what I do.
