Newborn Session Prep Guide

Newborn Session Prep

In the haze of early parenthood, everything moves so quickly. You’re learning your baby, adjusting to a new rhythm, and trying to rest whenever you can. I remember feeling like I didn’t want to schedule newborn photos. I was exhausted, uncomfortable in my body, and honestly didn’t want to spend energy getting ready. But now, those photos are some of our most cherished memories. That season is such a blur, and photos are one of the only ways to preserve those details. That’s why thoughtful newborn session prep matters. When done right, it makes the process simple, stress-free, and meaningful.

Why Newborn Photos Are Worth It

Newborn photos capture more than just what your baby looks like. They tell the story of your growing family, the way your baby fits in your arms, and the quiet love in those first days. These images hold the emotion of a season that passes before you know it. They give you something to hold onto when the nights feel long and the memories start to blur.

Even if you feel too tired or unsure, it’s worth doing. Every family I’ve worked with has told me how grateful they are to have those photos later. I’ve been there myself. I understand what it’s like to not feel photo-ready. But I also know how quickly those newborn days fade and how powerful it is to have something tangible to remember them by.

When to Take Newborn Photos

The ideal time to schedule a newborn session is within the first 5 to 15 days after birth. Babies tend to be extra sleepy and curled up during this time. They’re also more content being swaddled and held close, which helps us create soft, peaceful images. But if that window passes before you’re ready, it’s still okay. I’ve photographed babies at 3 weeks, 6 weeks, and even later. Some families need more time to settle in, and that’s completely fine.

If possible, reach out during your second trimester to get on my calendar. I’ll reserve a flexible session date and adjust once your baby arrives. You don’t have to lock in an exact time. We’ll stay in touch and plan around your needs.

Newborn Session Prep: Choosing Your Location

There are three main types of locations for newborn sessions: at home, in a studio, or outdoors. Each one offers something different. Let’s walk through the options so you can decide what fits your family best.

In-Home Sessions
These are cozy and relaxed. Your baby is already comfortable in their space, and you don’t have to leave the house. I’ll typically work in one or two rooms with good natural light. Bedrooms, nurseries, and living rooms are great options. You don’t need to deep clean. Just tuck away visible clutter like piles of laundry or items on nightstands. If that feels overwhelming, I’ll help you when I arrive.

The in-home setting allows for storytelling. We capture your baby where they actually spend their first days. There’s something special about photographing a family in their own space. The images feel intimate, grounded, and real.

Studio Sessions
Studio sessions offer clean, consistent lighting and a neutral backdrop. This is a great option if you don’t want to prep your home or if you love a minimalist look. I’ll bring soft wraps, blankets, and simple props as needed. The space is warm, quiet, and distraction-free. Some families prefer the simplicity and structure of the studio environment.

Outdoor Sessions
Outdoor newborn sessions are less common but can be lovely. These work best in warm weather with soft evening light. I’ll help you choose a shaded location with calm, natural surroundings. We bring cozy blankets and keep the session short to avoid overstimulating baby. Outdoor sessions can feel extra relaxed, especially for families with older siblings who enjoy open space.

How to Prepare Your Home for a Newborn Session

If we’re shooting in your home, you only need to focus on two things: light and surfaces. We’ll use the rooms that get the best natural light. Open blinds, pull back curtains, and let the sunlight in. You don’t need a magazine-perfect home. Just clear surfaces of clutter. Things like bedside tables, coffee tables, and dressers often show in photos. You can toss things in a bin and move it out of frame.

If the idea of prepping your space feels too hard, don’t worry. I’ll guide you when I arrive. I’ve worked in tiny apartments, big houses, and everything in between. What matters most is the connection you have with your baby, not how perfect your space looks.

What Should Baby Wear?

Keep baby’s outfit simple and snug. A neutral onesie or a soft muslin swaddle works beautifully. Avoid oversized clothes, bright patterns, or anything with logos or writing. The goal is to highlight baby’s face, hands, and features without distractions. If we’re doing any wrap or blanket photos, I’ll bring some soft options that photograph well.

Babies cry, spit up, and need breaks during sessions. That’s all part of the process. We’ll take our time and follow your baby’s lead. I never rush. Newborn session prep includes planning for those little pauses. You won’t feel pressured or judged. We create space for the real moments, even the messy ones.

What If I Don’t Feel Photo-Ready?

I get it. I’ve been there too (see above photo). After giving birth, I didn’t want to be in front of a camera. I was tired, sore, sweaty, and didn’t feel like myself. Internally, I felt like a mess. But I chose to wear a beautiful white dress for our session, and it was the first time in weeks I felt even a little bit like myself again. The flowy fabric moved gently, photographed beautifully, and—most importantly—helped soften so many of my postpartum insecurities. It reminded me that I didn’t have to look perfect to be worthy of being in the frame.

That experience is why I’ve filled my client closet with dresses just like it. Every gown is chosen for comfort, flattering fit, and how beautifully it photographs. You don’t have to figure it out alone. I’ll help you find something that feels good and lets you focus on your baby.

If you’d prefer to purchase something new, I always recommend a few favorites for postpartum-friendly styles that look beautiful on camera. Morning Lavender has soft, romantic dresses in flattering silhouettes. Nothing Fits But offers flowy, nursing-friendly pieces that are designed with motherhood in mind. And Baltic Born carries a wide range of dreamy, size-inclusive gowns that move beautifully and photograph well.

You can be in as many or as few photos as you want. Some moms only want a few with baby in their arms. Others love being included throughout. Either way is more than okay. I’ll gently guide you and make sure you feel comfortable the whole time.

Including Siblings in Your Newborn Session

If you have older children, we’ll include them in a way that feels natural and low-stress. I usually start with full family photos so they can participate early on, then take a break. Young kids don’t always have the longest attention spans. Giving them space to step away helps avoid meltdowns and keeps things positive.

Some siblings want to be involved the whole time, while others need encouragement. I use gentle prompts that help bring out real connection. I never force anything. My goal is to create a space where they feel comfortable and included.

Styling the Family: Client Closet Access for Moms

One of the most common concerns I hear is, “What will I wear?” That’s why I offer a curated client closet just for moms. It includes a range of flowy dresses in soft, earthy tones that flatter all body types and photograph beautifully. Sizes range from XS to XL, and every piece is chosen to feel both comfortable and special.

Many of my dresses have flexible fits, nursing-friendly details, and textures that photograph well in both natural and studio light. Using the client closet means you don’t have to shop or stress. I’ll help you choose something that works with the rest of the family’s outfits and the location you choose.

We’ll also style your partner and kids with a soft, natural palette that complements your dress and keeps the look cohesive without matching. I’ll send you a style guide with tips and examples so it’s easy to coordinate.

Timeline and What to Expect After the Session

Your session will last around 60 to 90 minutes, with plenty of flexibility for feeding, snuggling, or just slowing down. I’ll send you a few preview images within one week so you have something to enjoy right away. Your full gallery will be delivered within three weeks and includes a curated mix of posed and candid storytelling images.

Every session includes a print credit that you can use toward heirloom albums or custom wall art. I want your photos to live somewhere meaningful—not just on your phone. I’ll help you choose your favorites and offer design suggestions if you’d like help creating something tangible.

I’ll handle the details, guide you through the process, and make space for rest, connection, and quiet joy.

More Than a Session: Becoming Your Family’s Photographer

When I photograph your newborn, I also begin to learn your family’s unique style. I notice what kinds of prompts your kids respond to, what colors you love, and how you naturally move together. I pay attention to the quiet connections, the way you comfort your baby, and how your family expresses affection. That insight helps me tailor future sessions to feel even more personal and meaningful. Whether you come back for a one-year milestone, a seasonal family session, or the arrival of another baby, I already know how to create space that feels natural and right for you.

Kids remember me too. They get excited when they see a familiar face behind the camera. With each session, they open up more quickly, feel at ease, and show more of their true personality. There’s less warming up and more playing, laughing, and being themselves. That kind of trust only grows over time, and it makes each session feel smoother and more connected than the last.

The Why Behind My Photography Business

Returning to capture families over time is truly the heart of my business. It’s not just about taking beautiful photos. It’s about growing with you. I get to celebrate your milestones, witness your babies grow, and honor your changing seasons. Some of the families I work with started with engagement photos and are now chasing toddlers through golden fields. That kind of ongoing relationship is the most meaningful part of what I do. It’s an honor I don’t take lightly, and it’s a joy that keeps me inspired year after year.

My goal is always to be more than just your photographer for one day. I want to be someone your kids recognize, someone you trust to capture your family honestly, and someone who helps you feel grounded in the midst of life’s changes. Every session adds another layer to your story—and I’d love to help you tell it.
