Maternity Session Prep Guide

Pregnancy is one of the most life-changing and fleeting seasons you’ll experience. Whether you’re glowing, swollen, or somewhere in between, capturing this time with photos can help preserve what words often can’t. That’s why I created this Maternity Session Prep Guide—to help you feel prepared, relaxed, and radiant for your session, no matter what your pregnancy journey looks like.

Why Take Maternity Photos?

You might be wondering if maternity photos are really necessary. After all, you’re already investing in newborn photos, maybe even a baby shower. But here’s the truth: pregnancy is one of those seasons that can feel endless when you’re in it… and then you blink, and it’s gone. You forget how your body carried that little life. You forget how it felt.

When I was pregnant with my son, I felt huge. I had complications and couldn’t stay very active. My doctor approved walking, but even that felt weird. I waddled around, swollen and tired, convinced I’d be pregnant forever. I almost skipped maternity photos because I didn’t feel like myself.

Now? I can barely remember what that version of me felt like. And my maternity photos are some of the only images from that time where I actually felt beautiful. They remind me of the quiet before the whirlwind, of how strong my body was, and how much love was already forming.

This Maternity Session Prep Guide exists to help you make space for that kind of memory too.

When Should You Take Maternity Photos?

The best time to take maternity photos is between 28 and 34 weeks. By this point, your baby bump is beautifully round, but you’re not yet in the super uncomfortable final stretch. For some moms, especially with twins or complications, it’s wise to aim for the earlier end of that range.

Around 30 weeks, most expectant mothers still feel mobile enough for gentle walking or standing poses. That window also gives us time to reschedule if needed due to weather or health changes.

I recommend booking your session early—ideally around your 20-week anatomy scan. That gives us plenty of time to dream up a location, coordinate outfits, and prepare for a relaxed, unrushed experience.

And if you’re reading this and you’re already 35 or 36 weeks? Don’t worry. I’ve photographed many mamas well into their third trimester. As long as you feel up for it, we can make it work.

Maternity Session Prep Guide: What to Wear for Your Session

Clothing plays a big role in how you’ll feel during your session—and how your photos will look. Here’s a breakdown of what to wear for maternity photos to help you feel your absolute best.

For Moms

Choose an outfit that flows with movement and accentuates your bump. Dresses are ideal for this because they’re comfortable and create that soft, feminine look. Maxi or midi-length styles in neutral or muted tones work especially well with my light, film-inspired editing style.

If you’re not a dress person, consider a long tunic or fitted top paired with a skirt or relaxed pants. I recommend avoiding busy prints, bright neon colors, or anything that feels tight or restricting.

Some of my favorite places to shop:

  • Nothing Fits But — beautiful bump-friendly dresses in breathable fabrics
  • Baltic Born — flowy silhouettes in warm tones and natural textures
  • Pink Blush — affordable maternity styles in inclusive sizing

Don’t want to buy something new? I offer a curated Client Closet filled with dreamy, flattering dresses in soft colors and flexible sizes. Trying on pieces is always part of your prep experience with me.

For Partners

Partners don’t need to be fancy—just clean, comfortable, and coordinated. Button-down shirts, henleys, or knit sweaters with jeans or chinos all work well. Think timeless and minimal. Avoid bold patterns, baseball caps, and graphics.

Stick to earth tones, creams, warm grays, and soft blues or greens. These tones photograph beautifully and will complement your outfit without competing.

Check out Everlane or Taylor Stitch for inspiration.

For Kids

If your other children are joining, choose soft fabrics in complementary tones. Try linen rompers, textured knits, or neutral basics.

Maternity Session Prep Guide: How to Feel Good in Front of the Camera

Even the most confident people can feel a little nervous in front of the camera, especially during pregnancy, when your body feels different every day. Here are a few ways to ease into your session and enjoy the experience.

1. Practice Gentle Self-Talk

It’s normal to have mixed emotions about your changing body. Be kind to yourself leading up to the session. Say things like, I’m strong. I’m creating life. This body is amazing.

If you feel self-conscious, let me know. I’ve been there, and I’ll help guide you with poses that highlight your beauty and strength.

2. Treat Yourself Like It’s a Special Occasion

Take a little time for you before your session. Soak in a warm bath, get a manicure, or have your hair lightly styled. These simple rituals can help you feel refreshed and cared for.

Some clients even book professional hair and makeup for an extra confidence boost. I can send you local recommendations if you’d like to go that route.

3. Eat a Light Meal Beforehand

Don’t show up hungry. A light, protein-rich snack beforehand can keep your energy steady. Bring a granola bar and a bottle of water to keep nearby. If you’re prone to swelling, aim for water-rich fruits like strawberries or watermelon.

4. Pack a Bag with the Essentials

Here’s what I suggest bringing:

  • Comfy walking shoes (for between shots)
  • Water and a snack
  • Hair brush or small touch-up items
  • Lip balm
  • Change of clothes for little ones if needed
  • Any sentimental items you’d like included (baby shoes, ultrasound photo, heirlooms)

Making It a Memorable Day

One of my favorite tips? Turn your maternity session into a mini celebration.

Plan something relaxing or fun afterward—grab dinner, stop for dessert, or pick up your favorite takeout on the way home. You’ve just documented a powerful season of your life. Honor it. Celebrate it.

And if you have other kids, it can be a sweet memory-making moment for them too. Let them know this day is about welcoming their baby sibling, and treat them to something special afterward.

Even if it’s just an ice cream stop or a bedtime story with extra snuggles, it will make the experience more meaningful.

What Makes This Maternity Experience Different?

With so many photographers out there, it’s important to find someone who doesn’t just take photos—but truly honors the meaning behind them. Maternity photography is personal. It’s intimate. It deserves care, thoughtfulness, and someone who sees beyond the bump. Here’s how I approach every session with intention:

I’m in It for the Long Haul

This isn’t just a one-time shoot to me. I want to be your family’s photographer for life. I’ve had the joy of photographing couples for their engagements, their weddings, and then again for their maternity and newborn sessions. Watching families grow and capturing each new chapter is one of the most meaningful parts of my work.

Many of my clients choose to join my Membership, which includes two sessions over 12 months—typically maternity, newborn, a milestone session (like 6 months), or a family session around baby’s first birthday. Not only does it save you money, but it gives you the gift of a full, cohesive story of your baby’s first year.

This consistency means you don’t have to start from scratch each time. I already know your style, your personalities, and how to bring out the most natural moments. Your family deserves that kind of continuity and care.

I Offer an Intentional, Supportive Process

You won’t be left wondering what to wear, how to pose, or where to go. I walk with you from the first inquiry all the way through gallery delivery—and beyond. We’ll start with a planning questionnaire so I can get to know you and your vision. From there, I’ll help you select outfits (including access to my Client Closet), choose a location that fits your style, and prep you with simple guidance so you feel calm and ready.

During your session, I offer gentle prompts that focus on connection rather than stiff posing. I’ll never ask you to force a smile or do anything that feels unnatural. We’ll take breaks when needed. You’ll be able to rest into the experience knowing I’m fully present with you.

Pregnancy can be unpredictable—physically and emotionally. I show up with flexibility, empathy, and a deep understanding of what it’s like to be in your shoes.

I Value Timeless, Film-Inspired Style

Your maternity session isn’t just for Instagram. These images will live in baby books, frames, and memories for years. I believe in editing your photos in a way that will always feel elegant and true. My light, film-inspired aesthetic is soft, clean, and romantic. It’s not trendy or overly retouched. It honors real skin tones, real emotion, and natural light.

I photograph in a way that highlights quiet connection. Those in-between moments of tenderness, anticipation, and love. You’ll walk away with a gallery that feels cohesive, heartfelt, and authentically you.

This isn’t just about looking pretty. It’s about remembering how it felt to hold this kind of love inside you.
