When Linda first reached out about planning a surprise maternity session for her wife Natalie during their weekend getaway, I knew right away this was going to be a special one. They were visiting from out of town to celebrate Natalie’s birthday, possibly their last trip as a family of two before welcoming their baby. Carmel gave us the perfect backdrop: golden light, cool ocean air, and a quiet stretch of beach that made their Carmel maternity session feel like a dream.

The Light, the Love, and the Location

Linda and Natalie had never been to Carmel before, but they trusted me with choosing the location, and I’m so glad they did. We began their session beneath the iconic wind-swept cypress trees just above the beach, where light filtered softly through the branches. The textured sand and gnarled roots created a stunning, natural frame around them as they stood together, surrounded by the stillness of the coastal evening.

From there, we made our way down to the shoreline, where soft waves rolled in under pastel skies. The light was magic—diffused and peachy, soft enough to allow their emotions to really shine through. Everything about the setting felt calm and sacred, like time had slowed down just for them.

Why Their Outfits Worked So Well

Linda and Natalie brought such intention to their styling. Natalie wore a warm, light terracotta dress that was both minimal and expressive. The fabric moved gently with the breeze, and the color was the perfect complement to the soft coastal palette. It drew attention to her beautiful bump without overwhelming the natural surroundings. She looked graceful, earthy, and radiant.

Linda’s look was modern and grounded, with deep blue trousers, a white ribbed top, and a neutral shacket that added soft structure to their duo. The tones worked so well with the colors of the beach and sky. Together, they looked coordinated without being too matching, and the contrast in textures brought visual interest without distracting from their connection. Barefoot, relaxed, and joyful—they truly embodied the ease and beauty of this moment in their lives.

If you’re planning your own Carmel maternity session, I always recommend soft, natural tones and comfortable pieces that allow for movement. Let the landscape be your backdrop and let your connection lead.

Why Carmel Is the Perfect Spot for a Maternity Session

Carmel has a way of slowing you down in the best way. The moment you arrive, everything feels just a little quieter, a little softer. The salty breeze, the gentle curve of the coastline, the sound of waves echoing against white sand—this place invites you to breathe deeper and stay present. It’s one of those rare spots that feels both refined and deeply grounded. Whether you’re celebrating a milestone or simply craving connection, Carmel creates space for reflection and presence. That’s why it’s one of my favorite places to photograph love, especially in seasons as meaningful as pregnancy.

Carmel also offers a range of backdrops: sun-drenched beaches, towering cypress trees, and charming side streets filled with flowers and storybook cottages. Carmel is romantic, a little wild, and always inspiring.

Making Space for Presence

Linda mentioned when she first reached out that she was drawn to the spontaneity in my work. That trust allowed us to create something honest and unhurried. There was space to breathe, to laugh, to take in the moment fully. No pressure to perform. Just real connection, natural movement, and light that felt like a blessing.

It’s often the unplanned moments that become the most meaningful. Natalie’s laugh as the tide splashed her ankles, the stillness when they looked out at the horizon, side by side. These are the kinds of memories that linger.

While this session may have only been a small part of their birthday weekend, I hope it gave them something lasting. A glimpse into what this season of waiting felt like. A way to remember the beauty of right now, before everything shifts again in the best possible way.

Linda and Natalie, thank you for letting me be part of this chapter. For trusting me with your story and inviting me into your celebration. It was a gift to witness your tenderness, your joy, and the way you hold each other with such care. Your baby is already so deeply loved. I hope these images always remind you of the quiet power of this moment—of golden light and ocean air and the beginning of something beautiful.
