What to Wear for Your Engagement Photos

If you have become engaged only recently, then congratulations are in order! I hope that you will get to live a happy and fulfilling life together. But, first things first, if you and your partner have decided on having an elegant engagement photoshoot, there are some things that you should think about first.

What should I wear for my engagement photos?

Your engagement photos will turn out to be such a wonderful memento of the time when you have decided to spend the rest of your lives together.

The question of what to wear for an engagement session is not usually on the top of the to-do list for couples in the midst of wedding planning. However, making an effort to style your engagement photos will pay off in the long run! Your engagement photos can be used for Save the Dates, wedding websites, gifts, and decor for both the wedding and your home. You’ll want to make intentional choices about your outfits so the engagement photos can be used for as many things as possible.

Use neutral tones

My golden rule for all my couples is to go neutral with at least one of your outfits. Get some light, tender and neutral earthy tones that will make you look sleek, clean, and elegant. Some examples are whites, creams, tans, and light browns. The colors complement one another, and not completely match!

After you select your neutrals, you can pick 1-2 colors that you’d like to pop in your outfits. These can be seasonal-based colors, or just colors that compliment your skin tone. My favorite colors are earth tones like sage and light blue that pair beautifully with neutral tones like cream and leather.

Choose different outfits

For example, Erika and Christian chose two different looks for their engagement session. They wanted a few casual shots of them at the beach, and more elegant moments along the cliffside. I love being available as a resource for my couples, so Erika sent photos to me of several different options and I was able to help her choose.

I advised Erika to lean towards more neutral earth tones – like the cream and tan – in their casual photos. She chose green and blue as secondary earth tones that complimented the neutrals and went so well with her casual beach vibe.

Erika loved the idea of having something more elegant that would pair well with their wedding colors. She found a floor-length deep blue dress that looks stunning on her! She made sure Christian’s outfit complimented her own with tan slacks, a white shirt, and brown shoes/belt.

Why do our engagement photo outfits matter?

When it comes to what to wear for the engagement session, remember that you and your partner should wear something that makes you feel comfortable. When you feel comfortable, it will show in your photos! And vice versa – any discomfort will be easily reflected in the pictures. So, be true to your authentic style and pick whatever fills you with confidence!

Once you decide on your engagement photo outfits, everything else will start falling into place. This means that you can relax, enjoy, and get the most out of the pictures.
